Ep 13 BT Podcast – Importance of Formal safety Training in Construction

When we, the field safety dept., visit jobsites, we often ask if they conduct formal safety training and the response is usually yes, we have safety meetings. Safety meetings is not formal safety training, meetings or toolbox talks are reminders to be safe and use what we learned from safety training.

Why is Formal Safety Training Important?

  • Reduces Accidents: Proper training equips us with the knowledge and skills to recognize hazards and avoid potential accidents. It helps in preventing injuries and even fatalities on the job site.
  • Enhances Skills and Efficiency: Beyond safety, training helps us improve our construction skills, making us more efficient and effective workers.
  • Compliance with Regulations: Many safety regulations and standards are mandatory. Proper training ensures that we are compliant, reducing the risk of penalties or legal actions against us or the company.
  • Promotes a Safety Culture: When everyone is trained and knowledgeable about safety practices, it fosters a culture where safety is a priority for everyone, not just management.

What Does Formal Safety Training Cover?

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Proper selection, use, and maintenance of PPE like hardhats, gloves, safety shoes, etc.
  • Hazard Communication: Understanding safety data sheets (SDS), labels, pictograms, and the importance of communicating hazards to others.
  • Tool and Equipment Safety: Safe operation, maintenance, and storage of tools and equipment.
  • Fall Protection: Techniques and equipment for preventing falls from heights.
  • Electrical Safety: Understanding of electrical hazards and safe work practices around electricity.
  • Emergency Procedures: Response to fires, injuries, and other emergencies.

Our Responsibility:

  • Stay Updated: Regulations and best practices evolve. It’s our responsibility to stay updated and participate in refresher courses as needed.
  • Report Concerns: If you notice unsafe conditions or practices, report them immediately to ensure everyone’s safety.
  • Encourage Each Other: Share knowledge and encourage fellow workers to attend training sessions. Remember, we’re all in this together.

Formal safety training is not just a box we need to check off; it’s an ongoing commitment to your organization and the well-being of your team. Make it a point to take safety seriously, attend training, and apply what we learn every day on the job.

Remember, safety is everyone’s responsibility. We need work together to ensure we all go home safely at the end of the day.
